Located in
southeast Mississippi in Jackson and George County, the Pascagoula River
Wildlife Management Area is composed of 37,124 acres surrounding the
Pascagoula River, the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states.
Because the major tributaries of the Pascagoula River are not dammed,
the water levels within the wildlife management area fluctuate widely due
to rainfall. Since water levels are allowed
to fluctuate naturally, a variety of habitats are present in the river,
creeks, sloughs, and swamps. The Pascagoula River and surrounding area
support hundreds of
species of animals, many endemic only to the Pascagoula watershed.
